The Importance of a Support System

It’s been a while, but I’m back again with a new post! With 2019 coming to an end, I’ve been doing a lot of reflection on the amount of hurdles and growth I’ve gone through.

First off, I finally found the career path I’m passionate about (proud future educator!). And I truly feel this is what I’m meant to do. The amount of joy I get when I see the kids I work with master a new skill is indescribable. I’m incredibly proud of the amount of work I’ve been able to put into this. And I’m so excited to share that even with life throwing multiple hurdles at me, I was able to make it on the Dean’s list! And with how difficult it was to even make it to class I am so proud of myself!

Second, I’ve learned to prioritize myself. For a long time I felt obligated to bend over backwards for anyone and everyone that stepped into my life. And wow, it’s so exhausting never prioritizing yourself. In many of my relationships I found myself wondering if they were genuinely there for me or if I had been the one carrying the relationship. So I’ve created boundaries in my life so that I can focus on my own mental health. It hasn’t been easy, but I plan on working on this throughout the upcoming year.

This leads perfectly into my final point, which is the fact that I am so incredibly grateful for the support system I’m ending the year with. I am so grateful for my family for helping me in any way they can, and for allowing me to take out my frustrations on them (my mom definitely takes the brunt of this one…sorry mom!). I am also so grateful for my friends that help keep my spirits high even when I feel so defeated. Even my friends that are multiple states away have still been a rock for me during this bumpy year. I’m also so grateful for those who also live with IBD that have helped me cope with my diagnosis (shout out to Christie for letting me rant to her over even the smallest frustrations). This past year has shown me who I can truly lean on for support, and that is life changing.

And for anyone who has read my posts: thank you. My goal with this blog is to help spread IBD awareness, and I plan on continuing this endeavor throughout 2020.
